The Godfather- opening scene

cinematography:
  • The scene starts off with a close up on the man asking for help leading to a bigger emotional response from the audience because you can see the man is tearing up. This also makes it feel like he's speaking directly to the audience as no one else is seen yet.
  • As he speaks the camera slowly zooms out into an over the shoulder shot slowly introducing the Godfather.
  • The Godfathers face isn't shown until after the man whispers in his ear to build tension on who the man is asking for help.
mis-en-scene:
  • Lighting in the room is low key and theres only one lamp on building tension (similar lighting to Apocalypse Now).
  • The Godfathers side is darker which suggests that he has a dark side to him that the man asking for help doesn't as he's asking someone else to do the job for him.
sound:
  • You can slightly hear birds chirping and the cat purring but other than that the surroundings are very quiet as they speak.
  • Some music towards the end of the scene and people chatting which shows while everyone is celebrating with the Godfathers daughter, he's still working. This shows he has an important job as even on special days he can't take the day off.
performance:
  • Marlon Brando is in the film just like in Apocalypse Now which shows he was a favourite of Coppola.
  • Marlon Brando plays an important role of a leader in both Apocalypse Now and The Godfather.

Under the skin- Beach scene analysis

cinematography:

  • long shot of a happy family to build a more emotional response to the incident.
  • panning shot from the alien onto the sea to show the man present.
  • track in shot when the alien is walking up to the mans body to make audience feel like they are there while its happening.

 mise-en-scene:

  • the alien is wearing clothes that do not fit in the type of environment that she's in, which separates not just emotionally from the people around her.
  • the setting is quiet and peaceful and looks like a place someone would come to relax which shows the stereotype of women (harmless) but just like the alien the nature shows another unexpected side.

sound:

  • waves clashing makes the scene more chaotic and scary.
  • silence of the people drowning because it also presents how nature is overpowering them.
  • strange music plays while alien walks up to the mans body to build up tension and let audience know something wrong is about to happen.
 performance:
  • Scarlett Johansson fits the alien role perfectly because she looks like an innocent pretty women but her actions say otherwise which breaks the stereotypes of women. This makes the scene more emotional for the audience as they expect a helpful reaction but then are shocked when she just watches the incident from a far.
