City of God- 1st scene

Cinematography and Lighting:
  • Flashes of the knife when getting sharpened.
  • Close ups of people preparing chickens to cook.
  • Keeps showing that one chickens reactions to what's happening to the other chickens.
  • Cold lighting and in the shadows at the beginning.
  • First close up on a person is on Lil Ze which straight away presents him as a leader.
  • Lil Ze gets two close ups at once.
  • When Rocket is finally shown the film slows down and he gets mid shots instead of intense close ups like Lil Ze.
  • Rocket has the first proper bit of dialogue making him more likeable to the audience straight away.
  • 360 spin on Rocket when they show the throwback.
  • Warm lighting in the throwback, more sky, less cramped and open space.
Sound:
  • Knives being sharpened, without the imagery it sounds like violence but in reality its to prepare a meal.
  • Traditional Brazilian music plays during the chasing of the chicken but stops when it goes onto to Rocket almost as if to say he's not involved in any of that.
Editing:
  • Transitions
  • Fast pace
  • Low angle shots on Lil Ze showing domination
Ideology:
  • Chicken presents the people that tried to escape City of God but failed such as Shaggy and Benny.
  • Gun (violence) and camera (ambition) are presented as the two possibilities of getting out of City of God (camera click also slightly sounds like a smaller gunshot).
  • Ambition is the only one that actually works as shown by Rocket.'

The Godfather- opening scene

cinematography:
  • The scene starts off with a close up on the man asking for help leading to a bigger emotional response from the audience because you can see the man is tearing up. This also makes it feel like he's speaking directly to the audience as no one else is seen yet.
  • As he speaks the camera slowly zooms out into an over the shoulder shot slowly introducing the Godfather.
  • The Godfathers face isn't shown until after the man whispers in his ear to build tension on who the man is asking for help.
mis-en-scene:
  • Lighting in the room is low key and theres only one lamp on building tension (similar lighting to Apocalypse Now).
  • The Godfathers side is darker which suggests that he has a dark side to him that the man asking for help doesn't as he's asking someone else to do the job for him.
sound:
  • You can slightly hear birds chirping and the cat purring but other than that the surroundings are very quiet as they speak.
  • Some music towards the end of the scene and people chatting which shows while everyone is celebrating with the Godfathers daughter, he's still working. This shows he has an important job as even on special days he can't take the day off.
performance:
  • Marlon Brando is in the film just like in Apocalypse Now which shows he was a favourite of Coppola.
  • Marlon Brando plays an important role of a leader in both Apocalypse Now and The Godfather.

Under the skin- Beach scene analysis

cinematography:

  • long shot of a happy family to build a more emotional response to the incident.
  • panning shot from the alien onto the sea to show the man present.
  • track in shot when the alien is walking up to the mans body to make audience feel like they are there while its happening.

 mise-en-scene:

  • the alien is wearing clothes that do not fit in the type of environment that she's in, which separates not just emotionally from the people around her.
  • the setting is quiet and peaceful and looks like a place someone would come to relax which shows the stereotype of women (harmless) but just like the alien the nature shows another unexpected side.

sound:

  • waves clashing makes the scene more chaotic and scary.
  • silence of the people drowning because it also presents how nature is overpowering them.
  • strange music plays while alien walks up to the mans body to build up tension and let audience know something wrong is about to happen.
 performance:
  • Scarlett Johansson fits the alien role perfectly because she looks like an innocent pretty women but her actions say otherwise which breaks the stereotypes of women. This makes the scene more emotional for the audience as they expect a helpful reaction but then are shocked when she just watches the incident from a far.

Just Go With It - Katherine meets Palmer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VNC8hZHHFE

Cinematography:

  • Shot on Katherine is slow and goes from bottom to top to show her dramatic transformation.
  • Mid shot of Danny and Palmer to show their reactions to Katherine approaching.
  • Camera focuses back on Katherine but also shows other people in the back using a mid shot to show how the attention is on Katherine.
  • High key lighting is used to suggest the plan is going well so far.
  • Some of Dannys face has sunlight shining on it and the rest is covered in shadow suggesting he's two faced or not telling the whole truth to Palmer.
  • Sunlight was on Palmer when it was just her and Danny but now Katherine is sitting down its on her back (took away Palmer's attention).

Sound:
  • Non diegetic song starts playing when the camera goes on Katherine: 'Roxanne' by The Police.
  • Song is louder when its on Katherine showing she's the centre of attention.
  • The song lyrics say, 'Put on the red light'
  • A red light makes people stop which is what Katherine did when she walked in the hotel.
  • Other lyrics in the song speak about a girl, 'Loved you since I knew you' which foreshadows something will happen between Danny and Katherine as they're long time friends.

Mis-en-scene:
  • Katherine is wearing the clothes Danny bought her to make her over.
  • They're all drinking alcohol which helps make the story about Katherine taking pills and drinking (being a bad wife in general) more believable to Palmer.
  • Set in a fancy hotel which matches Katherines transformation.
  • Palmers phone is on the table showing she has nothing to hide (Danny's and Katherine's phones are not on the table and they're lying to Palmer).

Performance:
  • Palmer is sitting up very still and straight and just making confused facial expressions with not much dialogue (feels uncomfortable hearing things she thinks are true).
  • Danny is really laid back and Katherine uses her hands a lot when speaking showing they're both really comfortable lying.

Representation:
  • Its easier to lie rather than tell the truth as Danny and Katherine look so much for comfortable than Palmer in the whole situation.
  • The name of the movie is 'Just go with it' which means its easier to just go with the lie and keep making more on the way instead of telling the truth.

Ideology:
  • Danny and Katherine are sitting closer together and seem more comfortable around each other which shows sometimes we have what were looking for right in front of us but we just ignore it for something thats out of our comfort zone.

Spectatorship:
  • A passive spectator would feel sorry for Palmer for having to listen to all those lies and get hurt if the truth came out.
  • An active spectator on the other hand would support it as it helps bring Danny and Katherine together in the end which maybe might've not happened if Palmer didn't come into Danny's life.
